Karen Newman
Karen Newman launched NEWMAN ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN studio upon her return from London in 1996, where she started her career as an architect.
In South Africa she has drawn inspiration from the wealth of vernacular architectural
references, the big sky environment and the variety of clients that have worked with
her.
Karen believes that good architecture should not blindly follow trends; that the essence of successful design lies in understanding the real needs of the client and interpreting them creatively. Karen has built a strong team around her, and Newman Architecture & Design strives to create buildings that are sensitive to their surroundings, enhance the space that they occupy, and are mindful of the needs of those who will inhabit them. This sound design philosophy is reflected in numerous projects throughout South Africa and beyond.

Tamsyn Bowren
Tamsyn Bowren joined NEWMAN ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN studio in 2014 after working in Southern and East Africa working in safari lodge design.
With a Masters in Interior Architecture (Florence, Italy), Tamsyn is able to offer a full turn-key service, which incorporates all elements of design including floors, walls, lighting, joinery and furnishings resulting in successful “form and function” optimization in each project. Tamsyn is able to understand the architect’s vision, interpret the needs of the client, and as such enhances the integrity of a building.
Tamsyn’s design philosophy recognizes that each project is a unique reflection of the client’s personality, and should both fuel passion and move seamlessly through time. Tamsyn wants her clients to feel excited in an environment that is as familiar as it is functional, as well as inspirational.
